Lost organic traffic, leads or revenue? Find out what changed
Something used to work and now it doesn’t. Before anyone rebuilds, rewrites or spends, the useful question is narrow: what changed, when, and which of those changes cost you money.
Businesses that used to perform better than they do now
This page is specifically for the situation where things have gone backwards. You had traffic, or enquiries, or revenue from organic search, and over some period it fell away. Maybe sharply after a particular week. Maybe so gradually that nobody noticed until the quarterly numbers came in.
It is a different problem from wanting to grow, and it needs a different first move. Growth work assumes the foundation is sound. A decline means something in the foundation changed, and building on top of an unknown fault usually wastes the budget twice.
The most common mistake we see is the expensive guess: a site redesign, a content push, or a switch to paid ads, commissioned before anyone established what broke. Sometimes those are the right answers. You just can’t know that yet.
If your performance is steady and you want more of it, Search Visibility Growth is the better starting point.
Where organic declines usually come from
A drop is rarely one thing. It is more often two or three overlapping causes, and the order you fix them in matters.
Technical and indexing faults
Pages that stopped being crawled or indexed, broken canonicals, accidental noindex tags, robots rules, server errors, or a sitemap that quietly stopped updating. Invisible from the front end, and often the whole story.
Migrations and redesigns
New site, new platform, new URLs. Missing or chained redirects, lost internal links, content that didn’t survive the move, and metadata that got regenerated. One of the most frequent causes we find.
Content changes
Pages rewritten, merged, shortened or removed. Content that answered a specific question and no longer does. Sometimes the page that was quietly carrying the site got tidied away.
Position and visibility losses
Which searches you have slipped on, when it happened, and whether the loss is concentrated in a handful of pages or spread thinly across the whole site. Those two patterns have different causes.
Google changing the results page
AI Overviews, expanded local blocks, more ads above the fold. Your position can be unchanged while your clicks halve, because the page around you changed shape.
Competitors moving
Someone else invested, published, or was acquired. Nothing on your site broke. The market simply moved past it, which calls for a different response than a repair.
Local visibility losses
Google Business Profile suspensions, category or service area changes, review problems, or a competitor closer to the searcher taking the map placement you used to hold.
Tracking that broke
Sometimes the leads didn’t fall. The recording of them did. A changed form, a consent banner, a missing tag, a new analytics property. Always worth ruling out before anything else.
The AI answer layer
Questions that used to bring visitors now get resolved inside an assistant or an AI summary. Informational pages feel this first, and it does not show up in position data at all.
How the investigation runs
Establish the timeline
When did it start, how steep was it, and what else happened in the same window: a release, a migration, a rewrite, a Google update. Most cases narrow sharply at this step.
Separate the causes
Technical, content, off site and market factors are checked against that timeline, so correlation is tested rather than assumed. A drop that predates the redesign was not caused by the redesign.
Size the impact
Which losses carried commercial value. A large traffic drop on pages that never produced enquiries matters far less than a small drop on the ones that did.
A prioritised recovery plan
What to fix, in what order, with the reasoning and the likely effort for each. Written so your own developer can act on it if you would rather not use us.
Organic Revenue Recovery
We can find the cause. We can’t promise the recovery
Some declines reverse substantially once the fault is fixed. A broken redirect chain or an accidental noindex can be undone, and the recovery can be quick. Others don’t. If a competitor has outgrown you, or Google now answers the question itself, no amount of repair returns things to exactly how they were.
So the promise here is the diagnosis, not the outcome. You will get a clear account of what changed, which parts are fixable, which are not, and what a realistic ceiling looks like from here. Where it turns out that the old traffic isn’t coming back, we will say so and talk about where the opportunity is now.
The findings and the plan are yours regardless of whether you do the work with us.

What businesses ask about a decline
The audit surveys the whole picture and finds opportunities. This starts from a specific event, your decline, and works backwards to the cause. If you don’t know why something broke, start here.
Typically one to two weeks depending on the size of the site and how much historical data is available. Complex migrations take longer because there is more to reconstruct.
Then that is what the report says, in language your developer can act on. We are not looking for someone to blame. Most of these faults are ordinary side effects of otherwise reasonable decisions.
Sometimes substantially, sometimes partly, sometimes not. It depends entirely on the cause, which is the thing we are establishing. We won’t predict it before we know.
No. It is a one off piece of work and the plan is written so anyone competent can execute it. Plenty of clients take it to their own team.
That usually points at conversion or tracking rather than search, and it is part of what we check. It is also the best kind of problem to find, because it is normally the quickest to fix.
